The Toronto Cycling Committee (TCC) received a complaint from a cyclist who was not allowed to bring bikes along on GO buses. In the past cyclists were able to bring them along if there was room to place them in one of the cargo bays. This was at the discretion of the driver however so one was not guaranteed that they would be able to get their bike on the bus. Now it seems the policy is that no bikes will be allowed on any of the GO buses. At the September 23rd meeting of the TCC where this was discussed and a motion was passed askinq GO transit to allow bikes on busses and improve the busses to allow them to do that more easily. As the TCC is just an advisory committee of City Council the motion is actually to ask that the City, through the Mayor, ask GO Transit to be more bike friendly. The motion is quoted below.

Advising that the Toronto Cycling Committee, at its meeting held on September 23, 2002, requested the Planning and Transportation Committee to approve the following motion:
“Whereas the Greater Toronto Area is the only large urban centre that does not have bike racks on transit buses;
And Whereas part of the Toronto Bike Plan promotes a seamless partnership between cyclists and public transit;
Therefore Be It Resolved That the Mayor of the City of Toronto, as a representative to Go Transit, request the Authority:
(a) to promote a bicycle friendly policy;
(b) to consider purchasing transit buses complete with bike racks; and
(c) to implement a consistent policy across Go Transit dealing with bicycles on transit buses.”
The idea of bike racks on buses is not a new idea. In fact Toronto is the only large urban center that does not have these as part of its transit system. I did a quick search on Google and found lots of info on cities that have this option including Ottawa Ontario, Springfield, Mass. and Lansing Michigan just to name a few. All of these sites have info on how to load your bikes on the bus. The Bike Plan section on 'Cycling and Transit' includes recommendations for Toronto Transit Commission to include racks on buses. This motion asks GO Transit to consider it as well.

This motion will go to the Planning and Transportation Committee on November 4th, 2002 (see agenda-PDF) for consideration. If you would like to see this come to pass please contact the Councillors on the committee. If one of these Councillors is the Councillor from your ward let them know. The opinion of their constituents carries more weight than that of someone from outside their ward.

If you want to find who is your councillor and their contact info the go to this page. and type in your street address.

I have listed the Councillors who are on the Committee below. Click on their names to get their Contact or click on their email addresses to send them an email.
