We received this message via the CBN mailing list. Please respond to the email addresses listed at the end of the story.

Calling all Toronto cyclists!

We are doing a three-part series on bike theft in Toronto for CBC Radio and we need your stories! Here is your chance to make your voice heard about this most heinous of crimes... We are looking for engaging, tragic, funny and newsworthy tales of bicycle theft in the GTA.

Have you had your bike stolen? Was it recovered?
Have you ever spotted your bike after it was stolen?
Have you ever bought a bike that turned out to be stolen?

What actions do you take after your bike gets ripped off?
What are your experiences with police and/or insurance companies?
Is the police registration initiative working?
Have you ever been to a police auction?
What is the best way to insure your bike? Do you have a rider for your bicycle? What's your deductible?

We've all heard that Toronto is the Bike Theft Capital of North America, so where do all those stolen bicycles go? Chop shops? The States? Ebay?

This one is a stretch, but have you ever stolen a bike and what did you do with it? (anonymity provided)

Finally, how do you recommend protecting your bike from theft? We look forward to hearing from you. Please include contact information if you feel comfortable talking on tape. The content of your emails may be put up on the Web page for the series, so if you wish to remain anonymous, please let us know.

Thanks for your time,
Adina and Kate

Article Comments:
i have a good idea...since the Toronto Police Department has a registration program for bikes. Why not make stickers for these registered bikes. Bikes that have been registered can then be easily recognized by thieves, therefore, discouraging them.

My bike literally got stolen from underneath of the cameras of the CBC building at about 6 AM today. Which really sucks. That was my only way of transportation in the last 2.5 years. Damn those thieves. Funniest thing I had a snap of seat and a front wheel. Which I always remove before I leave the bike on a leash, so I ended up with the seat and a wheel in the end. I think the best way to secure the bikes at least in the places like a big buildings is create a special monthly paid storage rooms that you can simply come and lock it up inside instead of outside. That would be great. Now since I can't afford a new one, gonna start walking again. ((((( I heard that there is a chop shops somewhere in the area of Queen and Spadina. So I gonna research those and hopefully find my precious bicycle. Thanks for the forum.<br />Kirill B.
