Councillor Case Ootes delays Cosburn bike lanes vote Posted: Jul-10-04
The second round of the consultation and approval process for the bike lanes on Cosburn Avenue will start with a meeting on Tuesday July 27th, 2004 at 6:00 pm. The first consultation process was derailed at the last minute by the actions of Councillor Case Ootes (Ward 29 - Toronto Danforth) at the July meeting of the Toronto & East York Communnity Council. (See previous Article). Councillor Ootes' stated that he wanted more public consultation on the issue. As pointed out in a local newspaper Councillor Ootes not only wants the process repeated but he wants the process divided into two separate consultations, one for each ward affected. Cosburn bike lane issue should have residents looking at council - East York Mirror. As the author of the article, Joseph Cooper, points out this creates "inefficiency and duplication". In fact it creates quadruplication since the consultation process was already carried out with a meeting on May 26th that was widely advertised according to City of Toronto policies . However it happened, the end result of this will be two more public meetings on the Cosburn Bike lanes, one for Ward 31 for the Section from Coxwell to Oak Park, and one for Ward 29 from Broadview Ave to Coxwell. At these meetings the plans for the Cosburn Bike Lanes will again be presented to the public. Councillor Janet Davis (Ward 31 Beaches - East York), who has been very supportive of the bike lanes and the Bike Plan, has already scheduled her meeting for July 27th, and the details of that meeting are below. Tuesday July 27, 2004 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Stan Wadlow Clubhouse - Auditorium 373 Cedarvale Ave. The details of the bike lane proposal and more information on the meeting are in the following flyer (Proposed Bicycle Lanes on Cosburn. I called Councillor Case Ootes' office to see when the meeting for the Ward 29 section will be. They informed me that that meeting has yet to be scheduled although they are working on getting it set up for some time in August. I will post an announcement when that meeting is set. Although residents have already come out and supported this project it is important to do so again. The comments gathered at these meetings will influence the report that will go to the Community Council meeting in September. If you can not make it to the meeting you can send in written comments to works_consultation@toronto.ca. You should also call or e-mail your local councillor if you live in Ward 29 or Ward 31.
