This coming Monday morning, April 10th, at 7:15 am CBC Toronto's morning radio program, Metro Morning, will focus on the problem of bike theft in Toronto. They will look at how prevalent the problem is and what measures are being taken by the city and individuals to address it. They will have an opportunity to phone in after the program to relay your bike theft stories. There will be a follow up story on Tuesday.

In preparation for that program they have posted a poll on their web site asking how many times you have had a bike stolen in the past 5 years. If you want to participate in the poll go to their web site www.cbc.ca/metromorning. If you want to listen on Monday, morning Metro Morning is at 99.1 FM in Toronto.

Some tips on locking your bike.

Always lock both tires, plus your seat, to a secure post with a good lock. It's not hard, but it's amazing how many people just don't bother.

In the last 5 years I've had 0 bikes stolen, but before then, 3. I finally learned, but sometimes I was lax.

In 2005 I left my bike locked with only a U lock (the kind you can open with a bic pen) on Queen west. I hopped into a bookstore, saw the book hadn't yet arrived, so I stepped out after about 30 seconds. Then I saw the U-Lock on the ground beside the bike!

As I recovered from my shock, some guy walked by and said, "nice bike" with a huge smile.

Now I always lug around one HEAVY lock, a secondary cable and lock my bike religiously.
