Update to:
Portlands Energy Centre Health and Environmental impacts discussed: June 1st, 2006 Posted: May-27-06

Work has started at the site of the Portlands Energy Centre but residents are still working to see a halt to the construction of a plant that would degrade the air quality for east end Toronto Residents and for users of the existing and planned recreation facilities in the area. An upcoming consultation meeting regarding a pipeline to supply the plant on Sept 6th will be next opportunity to voice their concerns.

Portlands Energy Centre August 30th
Work has begun on the groundwork for the Portlands Energy Centre located next to the planned Lake Ontario Park and recreational sports fields as well as the existing Martin Goodman Trail.

The following is a announcement from the Toronto Energy Coalition www.torontoenergycoalition.ca.

The Toronto Energy Coalition is committed to stopping the Ontario government's waterfront power plant. This plant has not received a full Environmental Assessment and would add air pollution to locations already experiencing high death rates from existing air pollution. In addition, the plant would begin to reindustrialize Toronto's waterfront—a priceless assest we should use to enhance our city.

We are using lawn signs, petitions, letters and public meetings to make Torontonians aware of how they can help stop the plant.

There is an important meeting to discuss a new natural gas pipe line to supply the proposed plant.

You can help by attending this meeting and demonstrating your opposition to both the pipe line and the plant. The meeting is scheduled for

WED, 6 Sept, 6 pm
MATTY ECKLER COMMUNITY CENTRE
953 GERRARD ST. EAST
@ Pape Ave, Opposite Gerrard Sq. Parking lot

Construction of the plant is going ahead without a full Environmental Assessment. The coalition is asking for the environmental assessment to look at the impact adding another source of air pollution to an area with already poor air quality. Letter to Environment Minister Broten
