1) Are you familiar with the Toronto Bike Plan and will you support its implementation of as one means of reducing car dependance as outlined in Toronto's Official Plan?Strongly Support
Comments: : We must encourage all alternate forms of transportation (away from automobiles) to help make this City more livable, and safer for all. The Toronto Bike Plan is an inspired way to encourage more interaction with people, maintain healthy lifestyles and slow down the frenetic pace of our City. After all, when was the last time you had a conversation with somebody new while idling in your car at a stoplight?

2) Would you support requests to amend bylaws to exempt bicycles from traffic calming turn restrictions and entry restrictions on streets in your ward?Strongly Support
Comments: Many of these bylaws are for the purposes of keeping vehicular traffic away for safety purposes of that particular street. Bicycles do not pose a threat to our neighbourhoods that autos and trucks do, and should be permitted to pass through everywhere.

3) Do you support measures to ensure that the City of Toronto's policy of keeping bike lanes clear of snow is carried out; and would you support expanding this policy to off road paths?Strongly Support
Comments: Absolutely yes, and in particular the Martin Goodman Trail should be cleared with every snowfall so pedestrians and cyclists have a chance to properly enjoy our waterfront 12 months of the year.

4a) To build the Bikeway Network over the next three years, the Bike Plan recommends that the following amounts be spent by the Works and Emergency Services to build new bike lanes, paths and signed Bike Routes, and by Parks and Recreation to build new bike paths.
YearWorks and Emergency Services% of Works Capital BudgetParks and Recreation% of Parks Capital Budget
2004$3.0 M1.23%$1.2 M1.66%
2005$4.5 M1.85%$1.2 M1.66%
2006$6.0 M2.46%$1.5 M2.08%
** Based on 2003 Parks capital budget of .1 M
* Based on 2003 Works capital budget of .67 M
Will you support the above budget requests to implement the Bike Plan?Strongly Support
Comments: I am certain that with effort, the City can be made to invest in this very important initiative that will only pay us back in dividends in increased recreational, safety and health opportunities.

5) There are bike lanes and routes proposed for your ward over the remaining eight years of the Bike Plan. Will you be working to get these bikeway routes through the approval process and installed? View Map Strongly Support
Comments: Yes, I am fortunate to live along the Waterfront Trail, and I want to share with everyone the wonderful recreational opportunity it provides for my family.

5b) Do you support the idea of starting the approval process on one of the proposed bike lanes, paths or routes in your ward by hosting a community meeting during the first 6 months of your term? If so which route do you think is a priority?Strongly Support
Comment: I believe that there are two current opportunities for moving forward right away – first is Birmingham which is already under reconstruction and additional bike lane markings should be easy to implement – second, we must fill in the gap along Lakeshore Boulevard/Waterfront Drive to reconnect the Goodman Trail and the Waterfront Trail. I will push for both right away.

6) Do you support improved integration between Cycling and The Transit system by such measures as: Bike carrying racks on TCC Buses, and, building secure bike parking facilities at TCC stations?Somewhat Support
Comments: I have dealt with the TTC at Toronto City Hall as an Executive Assistant to a Councillor and I must say that the likelihood of ever getting them to accept bike carrying racks on TTC buses is none and less than none. However, the creation of secure bike parking facilities at TTC stations must be implemented across the City to encourage even greater transit and bicycle use.

7) Do you support an expanded city-funded bicycle safety program for adults and children?Strongly Support
Comments: The City should sponsor and the School Boards should make it part of their physical education curriculum, classes for children to learn about safe bicycle operation and the rules of the road. Adults often could use a refresher course themselves! Motorists should receive frequent safety messages from the Province (like each time they renew their plate stickers) and together with the City expand awareness programs to reduce accidents.

8) Would you support dedicating more resources to promote bicycle commuting by employees of private and public sector employers, including City of Toronto staff?Strongly Support
Comments: Absolutely, each month should have a promotional car-free day to encourage greater public transit and bicycle use by all Torontonians.

9) Would you support initiatives to promote Toronto as a Bicycle Tourism destination?Strongly Support
Comments: Toronto needs every boost possibility to recover from years of Provincial neglect and City Hall mis-management.

10) Would you support the extension of the former City of Toronto's Zoning Bylaw regarding Bicycle Parking Requirements (which requires bike parking facilities as well as shower and change facilities) to cover all new commercial and residential buildings across the rest of the Megacity?Somewhat Support
Comments: This would have been strongly support, but I do not know if your question also covers small commercial plazas, and smaller apartment buildings that may not be able to afford the operational upkeep of such facilities. For certain scaled office and commercial/industrial buildings it makes tremendous sense – and why not a program encouraging existing buildings to retrofit these types of facilities?
